Consistent meta data translation with Translationstudio
The WIKA Group, a global market leader in pressure and temperature measurement, relies on Translationstudio from I-D Media to automate translation management for 50+ countries in its FirstSpirit CMS driven web platform. I-D Media extended Translationstudio‘s capabilities even further, allowing WIKA‘s editors to translate FirstSpirit language independent meta data information of assets, page references and datasets as well using project specific data structures.
With 11,200 employees, the WIKA Group sets the standard in the measurement of level, force and flow, and in calibration technology. The broad portfolio of high-precision products, solutions and services makes the family-run business a strong and reliable partner. WIKA's unique experience and know-how make sensing technology smarter, add more value and prepare it for a sustainable future: This is “Smart in sensing”.
Challenge
FirstSpirit CMS’s meta data is language independent, and language specific meta information requires custom data and form structure that allows assigning data to a specific language. FirstSpirit datasets do not have meta data capabilities in general and require a dedicated dataset field. Such structures are client and project specific and because of that, Translationstudio does not include such content during the translation management process.
Approach
Translationstudio was designed with technical adaptability in mind, and we focussed on keeping a consistent user experience. Plugins can be developed easily, using a Java API. Therefore, we developed a custom plugin to fulfil WIKA’s individual requirements.
Solution
To allow for meta data translation of assets, we implemented a dedicated workflow in FirstSpirit and added a process to Translationstudio that specifically handles media translation.
To allow for page reference meta data translation, we implemented a plugin that evaluates the meta data structure and adds translatable content to the XML as well. This mechanism was adapted and applied to datasets as well. During the import of translated content, meta data structures are updated accordingly.
Deployment
A dedicated FirstSpirit module added the required functionality to FirstSpirit and a Java plugin library extended Translationstudio. Settings files are created automatically by Translationstudio and allow to define translatable meta data fields to be included during the translation process.

With over 50 countries worldwide, we depend on consistent translations throughout our web platform. Translationstudio is our Swiss army knife for our daily work and significantly reduces the workload on the editorial team. And with the support of I-D Media, even individual requirements can be implemented quickly.
